3 Reasons to Teach Your Children to Swim

There are few things in the world that are as satisfying as cooling off at the nearest swimming hole on a hot summer afternoon. Children and adults alike race to soak up the soothing waters and drink in all the enjoyment that comes with swimming. Our children especially never seem to tire of their time in the water. In thinking about fun they have, there is only one thing that is certain to heighten the joy and excitement of children’s day in the water and that is the adding the confidence that comes with knowing how to swim.

Here are three reasons you should teach your child to swim:

1. To be Water Safe

According to the Center of Disease Control, about ten people die every day from unintentional drowning. Of those ten people, two are children aged fourteen or younger. Aside from drowning, another ten children receive emergency care for non-fatal submersion injuries.

So the most important reason your child should learn to swim is that swimming is the only sport that can save your child’s life. Knowing how to swim will prepare your children in case they fall in accidentally, or find themselves in trouble in the water. At Stone Sports Swim School, we teach the importance of water safety in every class. Remember that you can’t always be there with them. Knowing how to swim may save their life one day.

2. Promotes Good Health

There are few activities that match the health benefits of swimming. Swimming is spectacular for building endurance, maintaining a healthy weight, and maintaining a healthy heart and lungs. It is also great exercise for toning muscles and improving balances and posture. Learning to swim is a gift that will yield health benefits for a lifetime.

3. To Have Fun

Kids want to play in the water. From water parks, to birthday parties, to days on the boat. Our kids want to jump in and splash around. Knowing how to swim with enable them to enjoy these times to the fullest.

As they grow older, knowing how to swim will serve as a gateway to a range of other activities. Sports like Kayaking, Surfing, Scuba Diving (which we also teach at Stone Sports), and Triathlon are much easier to engage in when they are confident swimmers.

Learning to swim is a skill that once learnt is rarely forgotten. It's an ability that will maximize their enjoyment as children and help enrich their lives as adults.
